West Virginia Elections

As Chief Election Officer of West Virginia, the Secretary of State works to involve all West Virginians in the process of democracy.

  • Working with students, teachers and community leaders  through the Secretary of State's office to strengthen voter turnout.
  • Working with voters to  help identify how voting procedures can be improved.
  • Working with the Legislature to improve election laws will continue to make the election process more open and fair.
  • Working with the State Election Commission to continue election policy and public information.
  • Working with county and municipal officials in planning, training and practice to improve voter registration procedures, absentee voting and Election Day practices.

On our pages, we hope you will find the answers to your questions about elections in West Virginia.  The Help America Vote Act, which was signed by President Bush in 2002, outlines changes to election procedures.  In past legislative sessions, our office worked with the WV Legislature to ensure changes were made to West Virginia election law in order to comply with these provisions.  Click here for the full text of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).   If you would like additional information, email us at elections@wvsos.com.
